His father was a farmworker and his mother a seamstress. They later became merchants, owning a store where Orsi worked serving customers from a very young age. He was also a folklore dancer. He is a History Professor, a graduate of the Artigas Teachers’ Institute (IPA). He worked as a teacher and adjunct professor at schools in Canelones, Florida, and Maldonado for over a decade. His political career began as a grassroots activist for the Broad Front, a position that led him to join the National Plenary of the left-wing coalition. At the sector level, he joined the ranks of the Vertiente Artiguista party and later joined the Popular Participation Movement (MPP). In May 2005, he was nominated by the MPP to be the first alternate candidate for Mayor of Canelones. During Marcos Carámbula’s two terms (2005-2015) as Mayor, Orsi served as the commune’s Secretary General. Orsi was nominated as Mayor of Canelones after Carámbula’s term ended, and was elected in May 2015. In September 2020, he was reelected as Mayor, with the support of more than 60% of the Canelones electorate. His tenure as mayor of Canelones was characterized by the promotion of policies to promote and support small producers; support for social inclusion policies; and a strong commitment to sports and environmental protection.
