Michael Loeb is a serial entrepreneur and investor. Fired from Time Inc. at age 36 for
entrepreneurial antics in a corporate culture, Michael finally had the opportunity to launch his
own company, Synapse, with then partner Jay Walker. Synapse transformed the magazine
industry by successfully converting it to a credit card platform and reforming the subscription
model into opt-out. Nine years later, Time Inc. purchased the company for $800M.
Synapse was just one of two companies founded during Michael’s collaboration with Jay Walker.
Priceline was incubated inside of Synapse, and went public in 1999.
After his earnout at Time, Michael founded Loeb.nyc, a venture studio/family office hybrid with a
single layer of infrastructure which launches and scales companies founded inside the portfolio.
Today, Loeb.nyc’s portfolio has over 20 companies, leveraging a self-funded
ideas-to-execution-to-exits formula, and boasts over a dozen exits including five unicorns with
Script Relief, SingleCare and Fetch Rewards.
Michael has also founded Uncharted, a tribe of 2500 entrepreneurs and family offices featuring
events in an expanding list of venues including NYC, the Hamptons, SF and LA. The next
iteration of this is Uncharted Pitches, giving a platform to all founders within the Uncharted
Community.
Michael is a supporter of education and development of younger generations and has
advocated for them in a variety of ways, including the robust summer internship program he
created for Loeb.nyc, and the conception and funding of the Loeb Career Center at Amherst
College. Additionally he served on the Juilliard School board for years as a passionate sponsor
of the arts.
Michael is a father of 6, and lives in New York City with his wife Margie.
