Prof. Lukoye Atwoli is a Kenyan psychiatrist, academic leader, and global health advocate currently serving as the Dean of the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa, as well as Deputy Director of the institution’s Brain and Mind Institute. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Moi University, a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Psychiatry from the University of Nairobi, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Cape Town. Before joining Aga Khan University, Prof. Atwoli served as the Dean of the Moi University School of Medicine. His academic and research career focuses heavily on psychiatric epidemiology, trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and youth mental health. Beyond his university role, he holds key leadership positions including Chairperson of the Board at the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya and co-chair of the Board on Global Health at the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. A widely published researcher, Prof. Atwoli is an International Member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, an International Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of Kenya’s Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S.) national honor.
