U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) is currently serving her third term representing New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate and will retire at the end of this term after an incredible career in public service spanning nearly four decades. Her career began in the New Hampshire State Senate, where she served three terms, before being the first woman elected Governor of New Hampshire in 1996. In 2008, Senator Shaheen become the first woman in American history to be elected both a Governor and a United States Senator. Throughout her time in the Senate, she has served on several key committees, including Appropriations, Armed Services, Small Business, and Foreign Relations.
At the start of the 119th Congress, Senator Shaheen again made history as the first woman to hold the position of Ranking Member on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where she serves as the committee’s top Democrat. Shaheen has served on the Committee since arriving in the Senate in 2009.
During her time on Capitol Hill, she has been known for her common-sense leadership, dedication to improving the lives of the middle class, and perhaps most significantly, her ability to work across the aisle to develop bipartisan solutions to some of the most critical issues facing our region and our nation.
