As executive director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, Gerard Ryle leads one of the world’s most influential nonprofit investigative news organizations. Under his leadership, ICIJ has pioneered a collaborative model of cross-border reporting that brings together hundreds of journalists to investigate financial secrecy, corruption and abuses of power.

Ryle has overseen many of the most consequential investigative collaborations of the past decade, including the Panama Papers, Paradise Papers, Pandora Papers, Coin Laundry and other global investigations that have prompted criminal investigations, policy reforms and the recovery of billions of dollars in public funds.

Reporters Without Borders named Ryle one of 100 global “information heroes,” describing his work with ICIJ as “the future of investigative journalism worldwide.”

Before joining ICIJ as its first non-American executive director in 2011, Ryle spent more than 20 years as an investigative reporter and editor in Australia. He began his journalism career in his native Ireland.
