Minister George Kronnisanyon Werner has served as Liberia’s Minister of Education since June 2015, working to improve Liberia’s post war, post Ebola education sector labelled by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as a “Mess”. Prior to becoming the Minister of Education, Minister Werner served as Director General & Head of the Civil Service Agency (CSA) from June 2013 to May 2015. While there, he led a team of public sector reformers with Governance Commission (GC) and Liberia Institute of Public Administration (LIPA) focused on payroll reform, institutional mandate & function review and capacity development of the civil service. He reduced the number of civil servants by 3,500- a task difficult in any country, but particularly where government is main employer.

Minister Werner was educated at four universities. He earned a Masters in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice, in May 2009. He also holds a Bachelors of Arts (General Education with Religious Studies) from Marist College (Africa), now integrated into the Catholic University of East Africa, Nairobi, Kenya. He studied Healthcare Ethics at the St. Joseph University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and English Didactics at the University of South Africa (UNISA) Pretoria, South Africa.
