Dr. C. Michael Smith

Dr. C. Michael Smith has served as President of the American University of Afghanistan since September 2009, during which time enrollment has expanded from 330 to a total enrollment of 2,000. He previously served as President of American University of Nigeria, Director of the Commission on Academic Accreditation in the United Arab Emirates, Associate Commissioner/Director for Planning and Assessment of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, Executive Director of the Hillsborough Education Foundation, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Education Fund, and Senior Vice President and Acting President of Winthrop College. He has held faculty positions at Elon College (now Elon University), University of California, Los Angeles, and Winthrop College (now Winthrop University). He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
