For too long, minority populations have suffered a disproportionate share of society’s burden. The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, affected people of color at a rate far exceeding their share of the populations. For Michael Blake, Founder & CEO of Atlas Strategy Group, the twin epidemics of COVID-19 and 1619 (marking the year when the first African slaves arrived in the then-colonies of the U.S.) must be rooted out. He explained the importance of making amends for what has happened before, and why we must invest funds to repair and help those who have been harmed.

It will take, he continued, a commitment to move from equality to equity. In order to repair, recover, and reimagine, Blake said, we must bring equity and justice to scale. Investments can transform schools and communities, bringing greater equity to those who need it most.

In the challenges we all have faced, whether it be in the South Bronx or South America, it is the understanding that it is time for us to go from recovery to reimagining.

Key takeaways & next steps:

  • It is not possible to move forward without addressing the sins of the past. Bringing equity and justice to scale requires investment in historically-wronged communities.
