The Internet is used increasingly by extremists of all types to radicalize, recruit, and train followers in spreading their messages of hate.

On May 22nd, Concordia and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD)* hosted a roundtable, Conversations for Innovation: Uniting to Counter Cyber Extremism, to discuss how to create counter-narratives to online extremism.

Along with Concordia Leadership Council member, Ambassador John D. Negroponte, top leaders in the private sector, a former extremist, and experts in the field joined the conversation. Each stakeholder shared their perspective to gain a better understanding of the scale of the challenge and to take steps in forming partnerships to turn the tide against violent extremism online.

Though extremist activity often takes place in social spaces controlled by private business, the private sector is regularly excluded from the process of fighting extremism. As an important stakeholder, the private sector should sit at the heart of the process.

Concordia was thrilled to work with ISD and host its guests in New York for the occasion. The success and outcomes from this conversation will work towards Concordia’s mission of promoting public-private collaboration.
